Our Story

A Vision for Community, Compassion and Care

Faxbridge Veterinary has a long-standing history rooted in family, community and a commitment to high-quality veterinary care. The practice was originally founded in 1952 by Eric Maydew.

In 1975, Jim Kenny joined the practice, becoming a partner the following year. By 1978, he had taken over ownership and relocated the practice from Emmet Square to its current home on Strand Road, establishing what would become the heart of the Faxbridge name.

In 1988, Michael Sexton joined the team and later became a partner in 1996. That same year, Jim and his wife Noreen recognised the growing need for accessible animal health supplies and opened an on-site retail store. This forward-thinking move made Faxbridge one of the first veterinary practices in Ireland to combine clinical services with retail, offering greater convenience for clients.

In 1996, the practice marked a major milestone with the development of a purpose-built facility that included a small and large animal hospital. The animal hospital was one of the first in Ireland to be officially registered, setting a new standard for veterinary care nationwide.

The next generation of the Kenny family began to join the practice in the years that followed. In 2007, Jim’s son Howard Kenny came on board and is now our Managing Director. In 2015, we expanded our services further with the development of a dedicated Equine Hospital to support the growing demand for advanced equine care in West Cork. In 2017, Megan Parker Kenny joined the team and today serves as our Small Animal Clinical Director.

Continued investment in our facilities followed. In 2021, we completed a full renovation of the small animal clinic, transforming it into a hospital equipped to handle orthopaedic procedures and complex surgeries.

In January 2024, Faxbridge Veterinary acquired McLaughlins, welcoming a well-known local name into our family and launching our dedicated e-commerce store to better serve clients both in-person and online. The following month, we opened our second clinic in Bandon. Located on the bypass, the new premises includes a small animal clinic and a fully stocked farm shop.

In 2024, we officially unified all parts of the business, from clinical services to retail, under one name: Faxbridge Veterinary.

Today, we remain a proudly independent and family-owned Veterinary Practice, serving West Cork with the same values that built our legacy: clinical excellence, compassionate care and a deep connection to the community.
